Local Citations: What NAP Consistency Actually Does for Your Rankings
A local citation is any mention of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) on an external website. Directory listings, chamber of commerce pages, industry associations, review platforms — all of these are citations.
Citations matter for local SEO because Google uses them as a consistency signal. When Google sees your business name, address, and phone number listed identically across dozens of authoritative sources, it increases confidence that your business is legitimate and accurately located. That confidence contributes to map pack eligibility.
Consistency is more important than volume. A business with 30 consistent citations outperforms a business with 100 inconsistent ones. If your business name is listed as "Smith Plumbing" in some places and "Smith Plumbing LLC" in others, or your address format varies, Google treats these as different entities. The signal is diluted rather than reinforced.
The most important citation sources for local service businesses: Google Business Profile (the primary one), Yelp, Facebook, the Better Business Bureau, Angi (for service businesses), your industry association, and local chamber of commerce. These high-authority sources carry more weight than generic directories.
Citation Building vs. Citation Cleanup
For most established service businesses, the priority is cleanup before building. If your business has moved, changed its phone number, or rebranded at any point, old citations with incorrect information are actively hurting your local rankings by sending conflicting signals to Google.
The process: audit your existing citations, identify inconsistencies, correct them in priority order (highest-authority sources first), then build new citations in gaps where you are missing from relevant directories.
Citation building alone will not get you to the top of the map pack. It is one signal among many — GBP optimization, review count, proximity, and on-site local signals all matter too. But consistent citations remove a barrier that can prevent other optimization work from showing its full effect.
