Fewer impressions. More than triple the clicks.
What happened when we stopped chasing traffic and started fixing what the traffic was landing on.
Most agencies show you a traffic chart going up and to the right. Here is a harder one to explain, and a more useful one.
Over four months on one home service client, organic impressions fell by more than half. Clicks went up 257%. Click-through rate went up more than 650%. Both things are true, and the second one is why the first one does not matter.
The problem we started with
The site was visible for a lot of searches it had no business winning. High impressions, almost no clicks, an average position in the fifties. That is a site Google is showing to people who are not looking for it.
Meanwhile the pages that should have been earning the work were sitting too far down to be seen at all.
What we did
We work three pillars in order. Local foundation first, because it moves fastest. Organic second, because it compounds. Paid third, because it should be buying clicks the site already knows how to convert.
On this client that meant rebuilding the service and location pages around what people in that market actually search, then fixing the technical layer underneath so Google could read the site properly. Schema, internal linking, page structure, the unglamorous parts.
We measure every page against a hard gate before it ships. If it fails, it does not go live.
What changed
Organic clicks up 257% across four consecutive 28-day periods. Not one good month. Four in a row, each better than the last.
Click-through rate up more than 650%. This is the number that matters most. It says the searches the site now appears for are searches it deserves to appear for.
Average position improved 33%.
On the paid side, over two 30-day periods: cost per lead down 18%, leads up 6%, and ad spend down 13%. More leads, for less money, at a lower cost each.
About that impression drop
Impressions fell 53% over the same period. We could have left that out.
Here is what it means. The site stopped showing up for searches that were never going to turn into work, and started showing up for the ones that do. If you are paying for visibility, you want the second kind. An impression that never converts is not an asset. It is a number that makes a report look good.
Where this client is now
Still climbing. Average position is in the thirties, which means most of the money pages are on page three and four, not page one. There is real work left.
We would rather show you a client mid-climb with numbers you can check than a finished story you have to take on faith.
More of the work we have done, including the full build detail on this client: see our results. If you want the method rather than the outcome, that is how it works.
If your traffic is flat, that is usually fixable
Or worse, if it is high and nothing is converting. That is a fixable problem, and usually not the one you think it is. Tell us what you are seeing and we will tell you what we would look at first.
