Plumbing is one of the most expensive trades to advertise, and the cost per click is not what decides whether it pays. What decides it is how many of those clicks turn into customers who book. Scruffy Mutt is a digital marketing agency for home service businesses, and this page covers how we run PPC for plumbers, what we can and can't see, and what to check in your own account first.
Table of Contents
Search Campaign Management
Emergency and scheduled work run in separate campaigns. Negative keyword lists built for plumbing block job seekers and DIY researchers, and get updated from your search term report each month.
A Landing Page Per Service
Each ad group points to a page for that service, with the phone number visible without scrolling. Traffic sent to a homepage is the first thing we flag.
Conversion Tracking and Reporting
Calls and form fills tracked through Google Ads and GA4, so you can cut what isn't working. Matching a call to a booked job needs your job data. We'll tell you what we can see and what we can't.
What Does a Plumbing Customer Cost in PPC?
Plumbing keywords are some of the most expensive in home services. Emergency terms run high because every plumber in the market wants them, and the person behind them is worth a lot to you.
The number that matters isn't cost per click. It's what you pay to get one customer who books. A campaign at four dollars a click that converts one visitor in twenty beats a campaign at two dollars that converts one in a hundred, and most owners watch the wrong one of those two numbers.
Plumbing is also an urgent trade. A homeowner with a burst pipe isn't comparison shopping. They call the first result that looks credible, so an ad that lands on a page with the phone number buried loses the call to the next plumber.
Pricing the campaign properly means knowing what a job is worth to you. A drain clear and a sewer line replacement justify very different bids, so we split them into separate campaigns rather than letting one budget serve both.
| Number to watch | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Cost per lead | What one call or form costs you, not what one click costs |
| Share of leads that book | Shows whether the problem is the ads or the phone |
| Search terms that spent with no leads | Where the waste is, by name |
What Is Included in Monthly Management
No black-box retainers. Here is what gets built and maintained each month:
- Keyword research: emergency plumbing, drain repair, water heater repair, sewer line and leak detection, mapped to intent so urgent searches get urgent ad copy
- Negative keyword build-out: a plumbing seed list that blocks job seekers, DIY searchers and supply-store traffic, updated monthly from your search term reports
- Ad copy: specific services, your service area, and a phone number in the headline where possible
- Landing page review: every campaign gets a page audit, and we flag traffic going to the homepage
- Bidding setup: target CPA or Maximize Conversions once there is real conversion data, not before
- Monthly optimization: search term review, bid adjustments, new negatives, ad testing and a plain-English report
Local Services Ads run in a separate Google account that belongs to you, and we don't set up or manage them. We can read lead reports there and tell you what we see, so you aren't guessing which channel is cheaper.

How We Build and Manage PPC Campaigns
- Audit or build from scratch. If you have an account, we audit it first: wasted spend, missing tracking and keyword structure get identified before anything changes. New accounts start with a clean build.
- Segment by service and urgency. Burst pipes, flooding and no hot water run in a separate campaign from water heater replacement, drain cleaning and sewer inspection. Mixing them costs money.
- Install conversion tracking. Calls from the ad and form submissions get tracked in Google Ads and GA4, with Google Tag Manager handling the tags where the site allows it. Without this, bidding is guesswork.
- Review the account monthly. We read the search terms for new negatives, adjust bids by time of day, device and area from actual conversion data, and test ads.
- Report in plain English. You get what happened, what changed and what we'd do next.
Our documented Google Ads results are in carpet cleaning, not plumbing, and the numbers are on our client results page. We haven't published a plumbing result, so we don't claim one here.
What Can a PPC Manager Track and What Can't They?
A PPC manager can see everything that happens inside Google: impressions, clicks, cost, calls placed from the ad, and form fills. Those are the numbers we report.
What happens after the call is yours. Whether the caller booked, what the job was worth and which technician took it live in your phone log and your job software. If you want revenue tied back to a keyword, that needs a tracking setup and job data on your side, and we'll help you build it rather than estimate it.
If your site runs Google Tag Manager, we use it to keep the tags in one place. If it doesn't, we'll say whether adding it is worth the work.

Who This Is For
PPC management from Scruffy Mutt Digital Marketing is built for three situations:
- Contractors spending money on ads with no clear ROI. Calls come in sporadically and you can't tell which campaign produced which call.
- Owner-operators launching PPC for the first time. Emergency searches are high-intent and plentiful. You need a clean build, not a DIY experiment that burns budget before it produces data.
- Plumbing companies running ads in-house with high costs and low call volume. That is almost always a keyword structure problem: too broad, not enough negatives, wrong landing page.
If you need display ads or retargeting, that isn't something we run for plumbers today, and we'd rather say so.
Which Numbers Should a Plumber Check Every Month?
You don't need a dashboard with forty tiles. You need five numbers that tell you whether the ads are paying for themselves, and you should be able to read them in ten minutes. We put these at the top of every monthly report.
Calls and Form Fills
This is the count of real leads, not clicks. A click is someone looking. A call or a form is someone asking for help, and it's the only figure that should drive a decision about budget.
The Search Terms Report
This is the list of what people actually typed before they saw your ad, and it's where wasted spend shows up by name. Reading it takes a few minutes if you know what to look for.
Step 1: Sort by cost
Start with the terms that spent the most. The expensive ones with no leads are where to look first.
Step 2: Mark the wrong ones
Job seekers, DIY questions, supply stores and other trades go on the negative list. Anything for a service you don't offer goes there too.
Step 3: Note the good ones
Terms that produced calls deserve their own ad group and landing page. That is how a campaign gets better each month instead of staying the same.
Analytics and Your Own Phone Log
Google Analytics (GA4) shows what visitors did after the click: which pages they read and where they left. Your own phone log shows what Google can't, which is whether the caller booked. Put the two side by side, and the story is usually clear within a quarter. If the ads send calls and they aren't booking, the problem is the phone, not the ads.
Brand Searches
People who type your company name into Google already know you, from a van, a neighbor or a past job. Those searches cost little and convert well, so we keep them in their own campaign and watch them separately, so a strong brand doesn't hide a weak campaign for new customers.
We don't run social media for plumbers, and we won't tell you it will fix your ads. If your team posts job photos on Facebook, it helps people trust you when they search, but it's a separate job from the account we manage.
Frequently Asked Questions About Plumbing PPC
How much does PPC cost for plumbers?
It depends on your market and how many services you advertise, and we don't quote a flat figure because it would be a guess. Cost per click on emergency terms is high in most metros. Your own Google Keyword Planner and the auction insights report in your account show what your market charges. The number that matters more than monthly spend is cost per booked call, and that depends on campaign structure and landing page quality.
Is $10 a day enough for Google Ads?
It can run, but it limits what you learn. For plumbing Google Ads in a metro market, a small daily budget is closer to a test than a campaign. At a small daily budget, a handful of clicks can use the whole day, so there is very little data to tell a good keyword from a bad one. If you start small, run one campaign for your most profitable service, keep the area tight, and read the search terms every week. Call (913) 702-2188 and we'll tell you whether your budget fits your market.
What keywords should plumbers target?
They fall into two groups: emergency (burst pipe, emergency plumber, no hot water) and scheduled service (water heater replacement, drain cleaning, sewer inspection, toilet repair). Emergency keywords usually cost more per click, but the caller is ready to book. Scheduled keywords are less competitive and help fill the calendar in slow weeks. Both need their own campaigns and bids.
How do I stop wasting money on plumbing ads?
Three changes fix most of it. Move from broad match to phrase or exact match so the system stops chasing irrelevant queries. Build a plumbing negative keyword list for job seekers, DIY searches and supply-store queries. Send traffic to a dedicated landing page with the phone number in the first visible area, not the homepage.
Do you manage Local Services Ads?
No. They run in a separate Google account that you own, with its own verification. We can read your lead reports and compare them to your search campaigns, but we don't set them up or change them.
Related Plumbing Services
Search ads produce calls fastest, but it works harder when your organic presence is solid and your landing pages are built to convert. The two channels feed each other. A strong Plumbing SEO presence helps the pages your ads land on, and a purpose-built Plumbing Website Design means paid traffic lands on a page structured to generate calls, not just visits.
These services are part of our Plumbing Marketing practice at Scruffy Mutt Digital Marketing. You can run one or all of them. For the general method, see Google Ads Management.
